La vuelta del marido chronicles the familiar motif of a husband’s homecoming, widely found across European ballad traditions. In this tale, a poignant dialogue unfolds: a woman beseeches a mysterious man to return her husband to her. Desperate, she offers him everything—her husband’s three windmills and even their three daughters. But when he demands her body as payment, she firmly refuses. It is only then that the stranger reveals himself to be her long‑absent husband. He proves his identity by recalling the secret birthmark beneath her left breast.
