This is one of the numerous version depicting the return of the husband, a well known pan-European theme, where the faithful wife awaits her husband, and when he returns, he tests her fidelity by pretending to be a friend of her husband who he claims has dies and asking him to marry his widow. She refuses after which he reveals his true identity.
